Confidential Blood Testing

The Men’s Health Clinic can offer you affordable and convenient easy access to the necessary blood tests for initial diagnosis and ongoing monitoring of treatment.

For accuracy of results and better reliability with sample collection, we recommend venous samples for all blood tests, rather than finger prick.  You have the option of ordering a test kit and making your own arrangements for a venous blood draw, alternatively we can organise for a nurse to visit your home or place of work and collect your blood sample, at a time and date convenient to you.

All diagnostic blood tests include expert review of your results by our doctor, who will contact you with his professional recommendations once we receive your results back from the lab.

Further details on the blood tests we have available from clinic, and the various options for collecting your sample, can be found below.  Please contact us by telephone to place your order.

Confirmatory Diagnostic Blood Test

  • This diagnostic test should be performed fasted (from midnight the night before your appointment), between 07:00-11:00, and not during an episode of acute illness.
  • Please ensure that you drink plenty of water prior to your blood test.

Add-On Blood Tests

The following tests can only be ordered in ADDITION to one of the blood test profiles listed above.  They cannot be ordered as stand-alone tests.

PSA:  £49

This blood test measures the amount of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It is normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises slightly as you get older and your prostate gets bigger. A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but this does not necessarily mean cancer.  All abnormal results should be discussed with your doctor.

Special Instructions:
  • You should NOT have an active urinary infection, ejaculated or exercised heavily in the last 48 hours; had a prostate biopsy in the last 6 weeks or had a DRE (digital rectal examination) in the last week.

DHT:  £109

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is one of your bioavailable male androgens.  Testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase which is located in the testes and prostate.  DHT has effects on brain function (including libido), muscle growth and repair, and prostate health.

Please note that this test is sent to a referral lab for processing and results can take up to 10 working days to arrive.

Special Instructions:
  • If you are NOT on Testosterone Replacement Therapy, this diagnostic test should be performed fasted (from midnight the night before your appointment), between 07:00-11:00, and not during an episode of acute illness.
  • If you ARE on Testosterone Replacement Therapy, it does not need to be a fasted or morning sample, but you should avoid administering your medication/s that day until AFTER your blood test.

DHEA-S:  £49

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands, which your body converts into testosterone and oestrogen. It affects many areas of health and wellbeing.  Most of the DHEA in the body exists in the blood in the sulphated form, DHEA-S, which is what this test measures.

Special Instructions:
  • Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor.

Pregnenolone:  £189

Pregnenolone is the precursor to all steroid hormones.  For steroid hormone production, cholesterol converts into pregnenolone in the adrenal glands and then several enzymes complete the production of multiple hormones.

Please note that this test is sent to a referral lab for processing and results can take up to 20 working days to arrive.

Special Instructions:
  • None

Progesterone:  £49

Pregnenolone is considered the father hormone, with Progesterone being one of the important hormones involved in that pathway to testosterone, cortisol and aldosterone.  Healthy levels are necessary for sleep and stress reduction.

Special Instructions:
  • Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor.

Serum Cortisol:  £49

Cortisol plays a role in metabolism and is the main hormone involved in stress and the fight-or-flight response.  Disorders of the adrenal glands can cause the over or underproduction of stress hormones which can cause symptoms such as excessive fatigue, anxiety, insomnia and weight gain.  This test measures whether your cortisol production levels are too high or too low, which could be having a negative impact on your sense of well-being.

Special Instructions:
  • Please take your sample as soon as possible after waking. Your result could be affected by corticosteroid medication (e.g. prednisolone). Ask your doctor whether you should stop before testing.  Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor.
