Before booking a New Patient TRT Consultation and commencing treatment under our care, you will need to have a formal diagnosis of Testosterone Deficiency.
An accurate diagnosis can only be made following a comprehensive blood test that includes a full hormone panel, as well as your more general health parameters which would highlight any potential reversible causes for your low testosterone. You would then need a second, more basic, confirmatory test four weeks later to confirm those initial results.
TRT should always be viewed as a life-long therapy, treatment will only be recommended by our doctors if you have already attempted to address any negative health and lifestyle factors, or there are no obvious reversible causes for your low testosterone.
When you first make contact with The Men’s Health Clinic, the path that you follow with us will typically start from one of three routes:
If you wish to discuss your personal situation further prior to committing to any treatment with us, you are welcome to book a 15-minute Telephone Consultation with one of our doctors, there is a fee for this service.
Your first appointment will always involve an in-person consultation with your doctor in clinic. At this appointment your doctor will thoroughly review your bloodwork, discuss your current symptoms and conduct a thorough physical examination before commencing treatment with you.
We will always look at your medical history and current/past medication usage which may be influencing your current state of health, and the ongoing decisions we make about your care.
Your social history is also taken into consideration, including any past drug usage, as this can often provide a useful insight into your current testosterone level. The information you give is in complete confidence so the more information you give us, the more we can potentially assist you.
Where appropriate, your doctor will go through safe preparation of your injectable medications, and gently guide you through safe and correct injection technique so that you leave the consultation room with confidence, ready to embark on the next stage in your journey.
At the end of your consultation you will have complimentary use of our InBody 770 body composition scanner. This allows us to record and track data relating to your physical health, as well as providing you with a benchmark to work from. Repeat scanning will also form part of any annual face-to-face follow up consultations carried out in clinic, there is no additional fee for this service.
We are always happy to support you in approaching your GP to have your ongoing blood tests and medications organised under the NHS where possible. A letter requesting shared-care with your GP can be issued at the end of your consultation, or at a later date, if required.
Please allow up to 60/90 minutes for this appointment.
All new patients (including international) must attend clinic for their New Patient Consultation and for their first annual review, usually 12-15 months later. This is non-negotiable as it promotes safe and effective UK practice.
After your first annual review in clinic, if you are a UK resident and stable on treatment, you can be approved for remote consultations and will no longer be required to attend clinic annually. Your treatment can then be managed remotely if preferred.
All international patients will still be required to attend clinic every 12 months for a physical examination and to collect their medications.
Four weeks after starting treatment with us, you will have a blood test to see how your body is responding to therapy. Everybody is unique and responds to treatment differently, so it is important that this blood test is taken and reviewed at this stage.
We can help you arrange your blood tests through clinic, or your GP may agree to organising these for you. Once we have received your results, you will be asked to schedule a 15-minute Telephone Consultation with your doctor to review your results, discuss how therapy is going and for any adjustments to be made to your starting protocol if necessary.
You are welcome to book a Telephone Consultation between routine follow-ups, if you wish to discuss your current treatment plan with your doctor over the phone, rather than by email.
Please allow up to 15 minutes for this appointment.
Your first formal follow up consultation is usually 10-11 weeks after starting treatment with us, you will then be routinely reviewed every 6-12 months.
You have the option of attending clinic for these appointments, where the necessary monitoring blood tests can be taken as part of your consultation and so no need to organise these in advance. Alternatively, if opting for a video consultation, we can help you arrange your blood tests remotely, or your GP may agree to organising these for you.
This consultation is an opportunity for your doctor to review your current protocol, discuss any health concerns that you might have and formulate an on-going action plan so that we can continue to safely and effectively prescribe your TRT. Your next three months of medications will also be issued at this appointment.
Once every 12 months, if returning to clinic for your annual face-to-face consultation, you will have another opportunity to use our InBody 770 body composition scanner so that we can continue to track and record data relating to your on-going physical health.
For all video consultations, you have the option of either a 15-minute (£80) or 30-minute (£160) consultation. If everything is going well with nothing to report, you are welcome to opt for a 15-minute appointment, otherwise please book a 30-minute appointment.
Please allow up to 30 minutes for all clinic appointments.
All patients (including international) must attend clinic for their first face-to-face follow up consultation, usually 12-15 months after commencing treatment, so that a physical examination can be carried out as appropriate.
After your first follow-up consultation in clinic, if you are a UK resident and stable on treatment you can be approved for remote consultations, and will no longer be required to attend clinic annually. Your treatment can then be managed remotely if preferred.
All international patients will still be required to attend clinic every 12 months for a physical examination and to collect their medications.
IMPORTANT: If you are based in the UK and opt for your annual consultations to be carried out remotely, you will need to provide evidence of a recent blood pressure check prior to your appointment. If you are over 40 years old, you will also need to provide evidence of a recent Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) or MRI, so that your prostate health can be reviewed. This can be arranged through your GP or another private provider if required.
Please forward the above evidence by email PRIOR to your video consultation, as your next prescription(s) will not be issued or dispensed until your notes have been updated with this information.
These blood test options are available to all patients attending clinic for their consultations, there is no additional blood draw fee with this service.
A copy of your results will be emailed to you as soon as they are received back from the lab (usually 2-3 days later), they are then reviewed by your doctor who will contact you by email with any further action.
This gold standard blood test monitors your current hormonal status, as well as your general health parameters whilst on treatment to give you a more complete picture of your overall health. This advanced test goes one step further by looking for some vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which can also have a negative impact on your testosterone levels.
This comprehensive blood test monitors your current hormonal status, as well as your general health parameters whilst on treatment to give you a more complete picture of your overall health.
This blood test includes all of the necessary blood investigations for routine monitoring whilst on Testosterone Replacement Therapy, so that you and your doctor can be confident that your treatment is continuing to be prescribed safely and effectively.
This blood test identifies what physiological effect your recent protocol change has had on your male hormone levels. Your doctor will take these into consideration, alongside any current or ongoing symptoms, when considering any further changes to your treatment protocol.
The following tests can only be requested in addition to one of the blood test profiles listed above. They cannot be requested as stand-alone tests.
This blood test measures the amount of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It is normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises slightly as you get older and your prostate gets bigger. A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but this does not necessarily mean cancer. All abnormal results should be discussed with your doctor.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is one of your bioavailable male androgens. Testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase which is located in the testes and prostate. DHT has effects on brain function (including libido), muscle growth and repair, and prostate health.
Please note that this test is sent to a referral lab for processing and results can take up to 10 working days to arrive.
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands, which your body converts into testosterone and oestrogen. It affects many areas of health and wellbeing. Most of the DHEA in the body exists in the blood in the sulphated form, DHEA-S, which is what this test measures.
Pregnenolone is the precursor to all steroid hormones. For steroid hormone production, cholesterol converts into pregnenolone in the adrenal glands and then several enzymes complete the production of multiple hormones.
Please note that this test is sent to a referral lab for processing and results can take up to 20 working days to arrive.
Cortisol plays a role in metabolism and is the main hormone involved in stress and the fight-or-flight response. Disorders of the adrenal glands can cause the over or underproduction of stress hormones which can cause symptoms such as excessive fatigue, anxiety, insomnia and weight gain. This test measures whether your cortisol production levels are too high or too low, which could be having a negative impact on your sense of well-being.
