Micronutrient Testing

Assess Your Nutritional Health By Measuring Definitive Biochemical Markers

Utilising The World Class SpectraCell Laboratory For Gold Standard Micronutrient Testing

Who are SpectraCell?

SpectraCell Laboratories are a leading clinical laboratory based in the USA.  Their pioneering intracellular micronutrient testing, driven by state-of-the-art technology, assesses a spectrum of risk factors and biomarkers for optimum health.

What is Micronutrient Testing?

SpectraCell’s Micronutrient Test measures the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids within your white blood cells (lymphocytes).  Scientific evidence shows that analysing the white blood cells gives the most accurate picture of a body’s deficiencies.  It is therefore considered the Gold Standard in micronutrient testing.

How do lymphocytes provide a nutritional history?

Lymphocytes have a 4-6 month lifespan, the nutrient levels accumulated in your lymphocytes represent a history of your individual nutrient status.  This is similar to using HbA1c measurements to approximate a diabetic person’s glucose levels over the months preceding a test.

Resting lymphocytes can be stimulated in the lab to undergo cell division and grow in culture. The degree of growth is directly related to the nutrients they have available, providing a functional intracellular assessment of their nutrient status.

How does the SpectraCell Micronutrient Test differ from standard micronutrient tests?

The SpectraCell test is more clinically useful than standard serum tests as standard tests can only measure static quantities of vitamins and minerals present in serum.  It is essentially a snapshot in time as it primarily reflects your recent dietary intake.

With their patented technology, SpectraCell can assess your long-term intracellular requirements by measuring the growth response of your lymphocytes under a variety of nutrient depletion conditions.  This determines functional intracellular deficiencies which might not otherwise be detected by standard serum tests, and provides a powerful clinical assessment tool.

Why test micronutrients?

Nutrient status is a foundation of health.  Each micronutrient plays a vital role in promoting optimal cell function so when some cells do not function at their best, our health is compromised which sets the stage for the development of disease.  Identifying and correcting nutritional deficiencies is an important step in the long-term maintenance of optimal health.

Vitamin deficiencies aren’t just a reflection of diet.  Since we are all biochemically unique, nutrient deficiencies vary from person to person and do not necessarily correlate directly with nutrient intake.  Many factors beyond diet determine whether nutrient function is adequate, these include biochemical individuality, genetic predisposition, absorption and metabolism, age, disease conditions and medications.

Who can benefit from Micronutrient Testing?

Anyone can be deficient in micronutrients and not even know it.  Studies have shown that 50% of patients taking a multivitamin are functionally deficient in one or more essential nutrients that are vital to long term health. Scientific evidence also confirms such deficiencies are associated with disease processes and the overall condition of your health. Deficiencies suppress the function of the immune system and contribute to degenerative processes. So, anyone who is interested in feeling his or her best can benefit from these tests.

What conditions or diseases are linked with nutrient imbalances?

Studies published in 2002 in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirm the connection between nutrient deficiencies and disease processes.  The following conditions/diseases have been linked to nutrient imbalances:

  • Arthritis
  • Parkinsons
  • Alcoholism & Substance Abuse
  • Behavioral Disorders
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Diabetes
  • Immune Disorders
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Osteoporosis

What results will I see?

SpectraCell’s Micronutrient lab results include a multi-page report with numeric and graphic reports easily identifying deficiencies.  It also provides further information regarding the physiological processes of these nutrients, deficiency symptoms, food sources and supplementation recommendations.  Click here to view a sample report.

How do I organise SpectraCell Micronutrient Testing through The Men’s Health Clinic?

Appointments can be made by calling us on 01202 091593.  It will take no longer than 15 minutes to have your blood drawn and no fasting is required.

As soon as your blood sample has been taken, it is collected by courier and travels overnight to the USA for analysis.  We therefore only book SpectraCell tests on a MONDAY morning, between 09:00 – 10:00, by PRIOR ARRANGEMENT only.

Full payment is taken at the time of booking, and at least one week’s notice is required for any appointment cancellations.

Available at our DORSET clinic only.
